Plutarch: : The Philosophie, Commonlie called, The Morals [...] Translated out of Greek into English, and conferred with the Latine translations and the French, by Philemon Holland [...]

Folio. First edition in English. pp. [viii], 1363, [lxv]. Title dusty and a little soiled. A couple of single worm holes to first few leaves, trivial marginal worming (not affecting text) towards the gutter of pp. 1040-1069, but text generally clean. However, restoration to 4O5 (pp.993-94), torn with loss of several words of text, and closed tears to pp. 589-590 and pp. 1004-1005. About half a dozen leaves have been affected by adhesion damage - although skilled restoration has proved effective: pp. 144-145, 982-983 and 984-985, 1204-1205 (also hole, affecting words of text). Recent half calf over eighteenth-century comb-marbled boards. Ownership inscriptions on title of George Greene (possibly the self-taught mathematician and physicist who died in 1841, a year prior to Scharf’s acquisition of the book); George Scharf junior dated 1842 (Scharf , 1820-95, illustrated various works on antiquity such as Macaulay’s Lays and was the first Director of the National Portrait Gallery); (John) Charles Elgood, dated 1896, the year after Scharf’s death (Elgood translated Horace in the 1890s).

Philemon Holland (1552-1637), was dubbed by Fuller, for all time, as, the Translator Generall in his age
